Curb Sugar Cravings Naturally!
Posted on July 12th, 2011
Everyone has a dietary weakness and sweets is a big one for me! With a history of diabetes in my family I need to be extra careful. Read any report on sugar and it’s pretty obvious that we need to cut our sugar intake. Sugar enemies such as high fructose corn syrup are changing our bodies by creating rolls or what we now call muffin tops. During the summer months it can be especially tempting to eat more sugary snacks and drinks. What can you do to stave of sugar cravings, enjoy your summer and avoid busting out of your clothes? Here are some tips for you to try:
1. Focus on Fruits - Fruits have natural sugars that provide the sweet “fix” that satisfies and provides fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants that do your body good! Reach for fresh blueberries, apples, kiwis, and other summer seasonal fruits. Keep a fruit salad in the refrigerator and maintain snack bags that you can toss into your bag on the go. Just watch your portions - a half cup to one and a half cups of fruit is a good daily serving size.
2. Drink lemon water - Lemons are a fantastic body neutralizer and craving fixer. Before you succumb to your sweet treat, drink a glass of water with two lemon wedges. Add lemon to some club soda for a natural soda minus the questionable aspartame. The lemon taste will temporarily turn-off your craving for something sweet which allows your body and your mind time to reset.
3. Pay attention to your monthly rhythm - Don’t be surprised if your sweet cravings feel out of control during that time of the month. Plan ahead by enjoying smoothie in place of sweets or adding a half hour of sleep to your day. The more rested you are, the lower your stress levels and the less likely you’ll binge on sugary snacks. One monthly trick I use to manage cravings is Peppermint Tea - love it!
There are creative ways to curb sugar cravings to avoid weight gain. Listen to your body, know your triggers, and tap into your natural solutions at home!

Thanks Meghan! Exercise can definitely help curb sugar cravings through stabilizing insulin levels and research suggests that sugar cravings continue to drop after exercise. That’s good news! Keep up the good work!
