Water, Conversation and Weight Loss
Posted on December 30th, 2009
I’m guilty. This week has been a week of visiting family and of course one thing we do very well is eat out. However, it’s easy to get “caught up” in the meal and forget where those calories are going. So, here are some tips that help me and can help you get back on track, or stay on course:
- Drink 16 ounces of water before each meal. Water fills you up and helps you avoid overeating. It’s not as simple as it sounds though. Just think, when you sit down for dinner do you want to drink 2 glasses of water? By getting in the habit of drinking water, you’ll feel better, you’ll have less room for over-indulging and the people at the table will be impressed!
- Change your plates. Eat dinner on a salad plate or appetizer plate. When your brain hones in on that full plate of food - on a smaller plate - it will trick your body into thinking it’s full.
- Listen and talk more. Have you noticed how consumed you get at the dinner table once the meal comes out? It’s like you’re racing to the finish line [go,go,go]. Give yourself 30 minutes to complete your meal. Now, that’s a long time especially if you’re used to inhaling your food within 10 minutes. Adding some conversation will also give your brain time to catch up with your stomach. In other words you’ll eat less and maybe learn more about your company.
Here’s an interesting article on the 5 major eating mistakes we make when we’re eating. Enjoy, and until next time, keep the water close by and the conversation going strong.
