Top 3 New Year’s Resolutions for 2010
Posted on January 1st, 2010
There are some universal resolutions that people set for themselves with the start of a new year; lose weight, get a better job or manage debt. These are great resolutions especially if achieved! However, my top 3 resolutions will make ALL the difference in whatever resolution you set for yourself in 2010. Here they are:
- SLEEP. Get a good night’s sleep (everyday!) - Sleep is the underrated, under appreciated - you name it - X factor in life. There are so many people who are sleep deprived, barely functioning, or in a “fog” on a regular basis. It’s no wonder that exercise injuries happen, productivity decreases and moodiness is the “norm.” My charge to you is to prioritize your sleep so that you get between 7-9 hours each night. Not only will you feel like a new person, but you’ll be amazed at how pleasant you are - just ask your family! If you want another incentive to sleep, think weight loss. The research has proven that more sleep prevents fat accumulation, especially around the middle. Now that’s something to sleep on! For more information on the zzzz’s check out my article on the importance of sleep.
- STRESS MANAGEMENT. Okay, life is stressful and we can’t avoid it altogether. However, what we CAN do is manage it strategically and purposefully. Each week, evaluate your schedule. If you know you have an insane schedule, try to remove some things off your plate to add some downtime. Delegate as much as you can - don’t feel like you have to be Superwoman - that’s pretty stressful by itself. Begin a routine of de-stressing on a regular basis. That may include a relaxing bath, a quarterly massage (you’re worth it!) or reading a book you enjoy (any books by Sidney Sheldon relax me). Stress is another villain that can add girth to our mid-section. Fight it by managing your stress levels.
- LAUGH MORE. Researchers have discovered that we need to laugh at least 12 times a day just to stay healthy. No wonder our kids are so resilient. Laughter is THE best medicine. Do you laugh much, if at all? If you have to think about your answer, you’re not laughing enough. So what do you do? Well, start laughing. Laugh about a favorite childhood memory, an unexpected surprise, an embarrassing moment (hopefully you can laugh about it now). If you’re having a tough time bringing the laughter out, make yourself laugh - just start laughing. So tomorrow, get ready to laugh. Approach each day with laughter on your “to-do” list. I promise that not only will you feel better, you’ll be healthier, and the people around you will notice a change. They may start laughing too.
I’m convinced that if you implement these 3 resolutions, you’ll be better positioned to achieve your goals in 2010. Sometimes, we take ourselves so seriously that we lose the joy in the journey. So while you’re on your way to achieving your resolutions think, “Sleep, Stress Management and Laughter in 2010.” Now, let’s get started…

Not Working Out is NOT an Option
Posted on December 19th, 2009
This last week has been a blur of family commitments, meetings and necessary errands. As a result, my workouts haven’t been as consistent as I hoped they’d be. At first I justified it by saying, “A rest day can’t hurt, I’ll just be sure to watch my eating.” However, that rest day became a rest [...]

Forget the Skinny Jeans!
Posted on November 9th, 2009
I read with amusement an article about workout DVDs designed to help women get into their skinny jeans. I asked myself the question, “Now why would anyone want to get into her skinny jeans?” I used to have a pair or two myself and I tell you they weren’t comfortable at all! I was constantly [...]

Top 5 Ways to Injure Yourself
Posted on October 13th, 2009
There are a lot of people out there that want to get in shape fast! I know plenty of folks trying to get in “shape” before a class reunion, a wedding or a special trip. They tell me things like, “I got this great program in the mail, it’s Extreme (you fill in the blank).” [...]

Unrealistic Expectations
Posted on October 10th, 2009
I read an interesting article the other day on how women set their weight loss goals. The article stated that most women set their goals based on their favorite celebrity. At first glance, this may not be such a bad idea; who wouldn’t want to look like Halle Berry? But on the other hand, it’s [...]
