  • Does Strength Training Make Women Bulky?

    Posted on January 6th, 2010

Strength training is a well known activity that we’re all encouraged to do regularly. However, when I work with many women, the most popular question I get is, “Am I going to bulk up?” If you’re a competing body builder, it’s possible to build mass but if you’re like a lot of women out there, you want to get lean without the added bulk. I hope my series of strength training articles will alleviate any concerns you have with lifting weights. Trust me, if you want to set your fat on fire, you HAVE to strength train.

Some of the benefits of strength training include: improved joint stability, greater ability to burn fat at rest, increased metabolic rate, injury prevention, sculpted, lean looking body, increased confidence and stress management. I could go on and on but here’s the deal. Strength training can give you the body that your want without extreme dieting or excessive cardiovascular training. Strength training doesn’t have to involve intimidating machines or extreme exercises. It can be as simple as a series of plyo jumps, walking lunges, push-ups, TRX specific exercises or routines using things like medicine balls, kettle balls or exercise bands.

Fortunately, we don’t have the same amount of testosterone in our bodies as men, so unless your taking steroids or eating too much, you won’t get big. The key with strength training is doing it consistently, periodizing your workout (changing things up a bit), getting the proper rest and most of all maintaining a good diet. In the future, I’ll have body specific posts and videos that will teach you the right way to lift so you can get the body you’ve always wanted. Happy lifting!
