Curb Sugar Cravings Naturally!

Everyone has a dietary weakness and sweets is a big one for me!  With a history of diabetes in my family I need to be extra careful.  Read any report on sugar and it's pretty obvious that we need to cut our sugar intake.  Sugar enemies such as high fructose corn syrup are changing our bodies by creating rolls or what we now call muffin tops.  During the summer months it can be especially tempting to eat more sugary snacks and drinks.  What can you do to stave of sugar cravings, enjoy your summer and avoid busting out of your clothes?  Here are some tips for you to try: 1.  Focus on Fruits - Fruits have natural sugars that provide the sweet "fix" that satisfies and provides fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants that do your body good!  Reach for fresh blueberries, apples, kiwis, and other summer seasonal fruits.  Keep a fruit salad in the refrigerator and maintain snack bags that you can toss into your bag on the go.  Just watch your portions - a half cup to one and a half cups of fruit is a good daily serving size.

2.  Drink lemon water - Lemons are a fantastic body neutralizer and craving fixer.  Before you succumb to your sweet treat, drink a glass of water with two lemon wedges.  Add lemon to some club soda for a natural soda minus the questionable aspartame.  The lemon taste will temporarily turn-off your craving for something sweet which allows your body and your mind time to reset.

3.  Pay attention to your monthly rhythm - Don't be surprised if your sweet cravings feel out of control during that time of the month.  Plan ahead by enjoying smoothie in place of sweets or adding a half hour of sleep to your day.  The more rested you are, the lower your stress levels and the less likely you'll binge on sugary snacks.  One monthly trick I use to manage cravings is Peppermint Tea - love it!

Beat Binge Eating - 3 Tips That Work!

Binge eating is one of the biggest downfalls in a weight loss program.  Binge eating can start subtly and turn into a habit; before you know it, you've gained ten pounds and may want to throw in the towel.  Don't let binge eating rob you of all your progress.  Here are some sure-fire ways to tackle the binge eating urge and keep you on track.

1.  Pay attention to your triggers - I talk to moms all the time about situations that trigger binge eating.  Some of the common triggers are:

  • Toxic Stress
  • Unexpected schedule changes
  • Marital challenges
  • Workplace struggles
  • Caring for family, especially young children

2. Include a trigger section in your food journal

If you want to lose or manage your weight you have to become an "expert" on what you eat and what causes you to eat.  For example, if you know that you get stressed out when the kids get home from school, log that time window in your journal as a critical zone.  Monthly cycles can also bring out the binge eating beast and you may find yourself staring into the pantry for anything sweet.  If you know when your triggers happen, you better prepare to deal with them, which leads me to my next point.

3.  Drink!  Okay, now that I have your attention, I'll expound some more.  You need an arsenal of binge eating solutions that prevent you from going overboard.  One of my number one tricks to attack binge eating is a glass of water with 1-2 teaspoons of Dr. Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar.  Apple Cider Vinegar not only has amazing healing properties but it eliminates cravings.  I use it regularly - I have to with four kids!
